The tactical and technical task for the creation of a fundamentally new armored car, which could be successfully used in the course of military operations against irregular formations, was issued by the RF Ministry of Defense on a competitive basis to several Russian specialized enterprises back in 2002.

The topic received a conditional, but quite telling name, "The Punisher". The second Chechen campaign has just died down (and the regime of a sluggish counter-terrorism operation, we recall, was canceled in Chechnya only in 2009). And just in the course of the CTO, it turned out that the Russian army and special services really lacked the MRAP class armored personnel carrier (a conveyor with circular bulletproof armor and mine protection, including powerful home-made explosive bombs).

The ZIL concern was the first to achieve some results. It was developing a "traditional" type of armored car, originally received the working name "Bear" and a promising armored car of a fundamentally new design, which the designers themselves nicknamed "Bedbug" for their characteristic shape.

For the Klop, a special chassis was developed at ZIL, but the life-size model, which was built by September 2009, is said to have been assembled on KAMAZ bridges. They say - because the car was not preserved. ZIL began serious, and the Ministry of Defense in this situation did not dare to finance the armored car, giving preference as a result. And the model of the "Punisher-Punisher" was simply dismantled.

Cars seen and captured by craftsmen in the spring of 2015 clearly differ from the skinny Bedbug in their brutal appearance. This is a similar, but completely different armored car - the Falcatus, which is apparently being developed jointly with KAMAZ by the Moscow ZAO Fort Technology in the interests of the FSB Special Purpose Center. At KAMAZ, they do not confirm their participation in the development of the armored car, but they do not refute it either. There is not a word on the company's official website about Falcatus, however, the site of Fort Technology CJSC is generally "under development".

The armored car is named after the curved Celtic sword - Falcatus or Falcat. If someone likes the fauna more, then the falcatus is also the ancestor of the modern shark, who lived 320 million years ago. Well, lovers of flora can produce a name from the indoor flower Asparagus Falcatus (Asparagus Falcatus).

As a matter of fact, Fort Technology CJSC, first of all, is a developer, manufacturer and supplier of bulletproof equipment. According to media reports, the company has developed and introduced into production a number of ballistic materials and armor compositions for body armor and bulletproof helmets.

The equipment developed and manufactured by the company is used by the FSB and FSO, in particular, the Grenadier and Defender bulletproof vests. It can be assumed that Fort Technology CJSC develops, first of all, armor and structural protection elements. By the way, the layout of the "Bedbug" had no armor.

Rally chassis

According to information from open sources, a Russian assault armored car was created on the chassis of a KamAZ-4911 sports truck (4 × 4 wheel arrangement, gross weight - 12 tons, YaMZ-7E846 engine with 730 hp, maximum speed - 200 km / h, the climb angle is not less than 36 degrees, the turning radius is 11.3 m, fuel consumption is 30 liters per 100 km at a speed of 60 km / h).

"Protected vehicle TsSN" has a combat weight of at least 12 tons and, apparently, is designed to carry 10 people. The external similarity with the Klop is explained by the fact that the design was developed by the same specialist - Svyatoslav Sahakyan, who worked at the ZIL at Zero, and later received an appropriate order from Fort Technology CJSC. There is a round sunroof with the possibility of installation in the roof weapons module. The bottom is V-shaped for additional dissipation of the energy of the explosion of a mine or a land mine. The wheels are protected from bullets and fragments by steel wings.

What's next?

Decisively incomprehensible. There is no information on the fate of the Falcate Punisher - neither dates of assembly on the conveyor, nor plans for adoption. We will continue to monitor the situation.

Who developed the armored car "The Punisher"?

Various information circulates on the Internet regarding the creators of Punisher, which further confuses the situation around the project. Some sources indicate that this is the development of KAMAZ, others claim that the machine was designed at the Moscow ZiL, and other companies are also called.

In fact, the creation of the armored car began in 2008 at the ZiL plant in conjunction with the Fort Technology company, which specializes in the manufacture of armor protection elements. Initially, this project was led by designer Svyatoslav Sahakyan. There is information that ZiL received the terms of reference for the creation of a "Punisher" type car in 2002 from the Ministry of Defense. Subsequently, the project of the armored car was completely transferred to Fort Technologies, which managed to interest the TsSN FSB. By the way, the second name of this armored car is the Falcate.

The Kama Automobile Plant is also directly related to the Punisher, because the first prototype, which appeared in 2010, was created on the KamAZ-4911 chassis, well known to the public due to its participation in the Paris-Dakar rally.

After the first pictures of "The Punisher" appeared on the network, users drew attention to the significant similarity of the armored car with the car from the game Arma 3. And this is true. The first images of "The Punisher" were posted in 2012, and the shooter was released only in 2013. So it's the game's designers who borrowed the look of a brutal armored car from ZiL, and not vice versa.

Description of the design and main characteristics

The machine is still secret, so there is little information about the features of its design. The "Punisher" is designed to transport special forces troops, and in the landing compartment, soldiers are placed back to back, which provides them with a circular view and the ability to fire through loopholes. And immediately, technology lovers, experiencing information hunger, tried to "pull out" as much information from the photo as possible. Let's try to join them and conduct analytical work.

In some sources, under the new Punisher photo, it was indicated that this was a development of the KAMAZ plant. However, it soon became clear that in Naberezhnye Chelny they are working on a competitive project, but their project has nothing to do with the machine under discussion. If the rumors about the KAMAZ chassis turn out to be true, then some conclusions can be drawn about the power plant and driving performance of the "Punisher". The 730-horsepower eight-cylinder diesel YaMZ-7E846 of the KAMAZ 4911 sports truck allows it to accelerate to two hundred kilometers per hour. In combination with a gross weight of up to 12 tons, this requires huge fuel consumption - about 100 liters per 100 km. Perhaps a slight decrease in the characteristics of the originally sports chassis, for example, removing turbocharging and simplifying the transmission, will allow the armored car based on the 4911 to have tolerable performance not only in terms of driving, but also economically. So, most modern armored cars have a maximum speed of about one hundred kilometers per hour, and fuel consumption usually does not exceed 20 liters per "hundred". One way or another, the original suspension from KAMAZ 4911 is not acceptable for a full-fledged combat vehicle and requires improvements. Whether they were and, if so, which ones, is still unknown. But in this case, in the analysis there is no place to start from.

No less mysterious is the body of the new armored car. In the available photo from the Dmitrovsky training ground, as well as on the network that leaked a couple of years ago, both prototypes look rather strange. In particular, the layout of the front end raises questions. If the engine compartment and the hood look normal enough, then the following glazing causes a lot of questions. Such glasses on motor vehicles are very unusual: large and located at an acute angle to the horizontal. One can only guess what the driver is looking at the road through them and what are the viewing angles. At the same time, the insufficient review back and forth, in which many people have already managed to blame the Zilovsky Punisher, against the background of more serious armored vehicles, does not look so bad. Unfortunately, both available photos of the car are made in such a way that it is not possible to evaluate its dimensions with sufficient accuracy. At the same time, there is reason to "suspect" the machine body of some vertical compression. In this case, the driver's head is close enough to the ceiling of the cab, which in combination with the design of the windows and the hood can serve as a transparent hint. It seems that the "Punisher" from the ZIL plant from the driver's point of view is somewhat reminiscent of hood models.

However, there is no exact data about the location of the driver and the view from his place. There are some "Punisher" concept art on the Internet, allegedly having the most direct relation to the project and supposedly leaked from the design bureau. They show the approximate layout of the cabin and the original design of the doors. At the same time, the front doors together with the rear ones form rather wide hatches without central pillars. Probably, in this way it is possible to ensure the normal opening of doors with specific contours of the sides of the body, as well as make landing and disembarkation more convenient. Thus, together with the driver in this configuration, five more soldiers can simultaneously ride (one in the front seat and four in the rear). Behind the "airborne squad", apparently, is the luggage compartment. On the existing photos of the armored car it is almost invisible, but much better it is noticeable on all the same concept art. At the rear of the machine there is a fairly wide cargo hatch with two wings. It is noteworthy that these flaps are bucket-shaped and protrude beyond the body of the machine. One can only guess why such things are necessary for an armored car, but in the available photos you can notice that such a design of the tailgate doors has "survived" to the prototype. The luggage capacity, as well as other parameters of the car, has not yet been announced.

Let's move on to defense. The word "armored car" itself implies the presence of some kind of armor. The most recent photo shows that the side doors received glass much smaller than before. Probably, here the designers of ZiL went the same way as the authors of many foreign armored cars - instead of a large and fragile glass on the doors they put small ones with greater survivability in battle. And the vacant place was closed with armored plates. Nevertheless, a huge windshield with a large slope did not go anywhere. At the same time, judging by its hue and the characteristic black stripes along the edge, a bulletproof windshield is installed on the photographed sample. The thickness and protection class of glass, unfortunately, are unknown. Similarly, there is no information on the metallic elements of the reservation. Apparently, the entire defense of the "Punisher" must withstand at least 7.62 mm bullets of intermediate cartridges. As regards mine protection, one also has to rely on conjectures. For example, the characteristic contours of the lower part of the sides of the body can hint at a common V-shaped bottom. However, the additional footboard and the angle in the photo do not allow you to see it. Although the armored car captured at the firing range may not have a mine base. In favor of this version is the fact that in the available photo, despite the snow that fell during the shooting, behind the front lower flap you can see something resembling a differential. It is unlikely that such an important part of an all-wheel drive car would not have been "awarded" with armor protection.

Summing up, it should be noted once again that there is very little open information on the topic "Punisher". For some reason, the Ministry of Defense and the ZIL enterprise are in no hurry to share "secret knowledge". Therefore, you have to collect the crumbs and carefully analyze the available. So it is impossible to exclude the possibility that this article in just a few days / weeks / months will be irrelevant and even incorrect. But for this, the customer and the developer of the "Punisher" must open the veil of secrecy and publish a sufficient amount of information. Until then, we will have to use only what we have. But the main and, perhaps, the most important thing that can be taken out of the "detective" with the "Punisher" right now is that the Likhachev Plant is still capable of creating new interesting projects. Against the background of the general state of the domestic automobile industry, this gives rise to some optimism.

The past of this machine is very, very thorny; and her future is not yet determined. Until recently, it generally seemed quite hazy and doubtful. But, after in 2015, they saw a car similar to a Batmobile in Tatarstan, it seemed to me that now, the series may already be close.
